Fires, BBQs, and Cooking
Can we have a fire or barbecue?
Yes. Each cabin and yurt has its own fire pit and grill for BBQ, perfect for cooking outdoors or relaxing under the stars.
Can I bring my own logs?
Yes, you're welcome to bring your own seasoned logs (max size 23cm). We also sell seasoned firewood and kindling on site.
What cooking facilities are provided?
All cabins and yurts include:
- Twin gas hob camping stove
- Fire pit grill
- Kettle
- Basic cookware
What cooking utensils are included?
You'll find:
- Pots and pans
- Plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery
- Sharp knives
- Chopping boards
- Basic utensils (spatula, ladle, tongs, etc.)
Facilities and Practicalities
Is there electricity in the cabins and yurts?
The log cabins and yurts are lit by lanterns with tea light candles and warmed by wood burning stoves. There is also low voltage (12v) lighting. There is a power point that accepts a phone charger only.
Do you have WiFi on site?
No - we're a digital detox woodland retreat. Mobile signal varies by network, but usually there is strong 5G.
Are the cabins heated?
Yes — all cabins have wood-burning stoves and are insulated.
Are the yurts warm enough in winter?
Yes — each yurt has a powerful wood-burning stove and plenty of blankets.
Is bedding included?
Bedding is provided for the main double bed only. Additional linen can be hired. (See extras when you make your booking). Or you can bring your own linen.
Do you provide towels?
No - please bring your own towels.
How far apart are the units?
Each cabin and yurt is secluded and spaced well apart within the woodland for privacy and quiet. Generally there is approximately 50m between each unit.
What are the cleaning protocols at Forest Garden Shovelstrode?
We follow a thorough cleaning process between every stay, including full linen change, sanitising touchpoints and refreshing all facilities.
Pets, Wildlife, and Safety
Can I bring a dog?
Yes. (See extras when you make your booking).
Can we let off fireworks or Chinese lanterns?
No — these pose a fire risk in ancient woodland.
Arrival and Departure
What time is check-in and check-out on-site?
- Check‑in: 4pm-7pm
- Check‑out: 10am
What do we do on arrival?
You'll receive full arrival instructions by email before your stay. On arrival leave your car in the car park, collect a wheelbarrow to carry your belongings to your cabin or yurt through the woodland.
Is parking available?
Yes — free parking is provided on site.
Do you have EV chargers?
Yes — there are two EV chargers in the car park.

What should I pack?
We recommend bringing:
- Towels

Where is Forest Garden Shovelstrode located?
We are in East Grinstead, Sussex, close to Ashdown Forest, Forest Row, and Hever Castle.
How far is the nearest pub or shop?
- Ashurst Wood (1 mile) — shop, butcher, pub
- Forest Row (2 miles) — cafés, restaurants, organic shops
- East Grinstead (2.5 miles) — supermarkets, high street, station
